Helen McHugh

Helen has more than 15 years’ experience as a defendant insurance litigation lawyer.

She defends health professionals and organisations in complex medical malpractice claims across a range of medical specialities including birth trauma, spinal, orthopaedics, intensive care, emergency medicine, gynaecology, obstetric radiology, oncology, cardiology and psychiatric injuries.

Helen’s workers’ compensation experience includes managing employer liability claims, catastrophic injury, compensation to relatives, dust diseases and common law work injury damages and recovery claims.

Helen’s experience extends to latent personal injury claims requiring consideration of historical public liability insurance policies.

Helen was a finalist in the category of Special Counsel of the Year in the Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards 2024 and the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards 2024. She was also a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards Senior Associate of the Year in 2017, 2020 and 2021. In addition, she was a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards Senior Associate of the Year in 2019 and 2020.

She is a member of the NSW Claims Discussion Group, Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA) and Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF).
